Red Cross Bangalore
Red Cross Optical
In 1987, Karnataka Red Cross established an optical unit at Minto Hospital, Bangalore, with the aim of supporting underprivileged individuals. The unit offers eyewear at highly affordable prices, making it accessible to those in need. For instance, punk goggles are sold for just Rs. 30 per piece, compared to over Rs. 150 in the market. In some cases, these goggles are even provided free of charge to poor patients who have undergone cataract surgery. The unit continues to run effectively, serving as a valuable resource for the community.
History of RC Opticals
The optical unit initially operated in an old, small building provided by Minto Hospital authorities, which was in poor condition. Recognizing the need for improvement, the Karnataka State Branch renovated the building, investing approximately Rs. 7 lakhs. This renovation had a positive impact on the unit’s business. The renovated optical unit was inaugurated by Smt. Sudha Murthy, Chairman of Infosys Foundation, on 26th October 2016. The renovation significantly boosted sales, with 1,845 spectacles sold in the first half of 2016-17 and 2,623 in the second half, following the renovation. The renovation was funded from the unit’s savings. Over the past 10 years, the unit received Rs. 5,65,500 in donations, with Smt. Sudha Murthy contributing Rs. 5 lakhs in 2009.
